The City
of London is 1,579 square kilometres in size including all
the suburbs and outer regions, the city centre is just over
300 square kilometres. The population is just above 7
million with almost 80% of European origin. London lies at
50 degrees 31 minutes north latitude. The famous 0 degrees
longitude runs through the district of Greenwich. The clocks
in London run 6 hours ahead of New York and 9 hours ahead of
Los Angeles. More than 13 million foreign visitors come to
London each year, this number is equalled by visitors from
Britain. Americans account for 18% of foreign tourists
followed by Germans at 11%. London tourism generates more
than £6 billion every year. There are 19000 cabs in London.

British Museum is the national collection of
archaeology, prints and drawings, coins and medals and
ethnography. This museum is the greatest and biggest of
its kind in the world was founded in 1753 and occupies a
neoclassical building begun in 1823 to the designs of
Sir Robert Smirke.

is the official
London residence of the
British monarch. Located in
the
City of Westminster, the
palace is a setting for state
occasions and royal entertaining, and a major tourist
attraction. It has been a rallying point for the British
people at times of national rejoicing and crisis.

Houses of
Parliament |
The Houses
of Parliament, otherwise known as The Palace of
Westminster, stands on the site where Edward the
Confessor had the original palace built in the first
half of the eleventh century. In 1547 the royal
residence was moved to Whitehall Palace, but the Lords
continued to meet at Westminster, while the commons met
in St. Stephen's Chapel. Ever since these early times,
the Palace of Westminster has been home to the English
Parliament.
Entry is through St. Stephen's Entrance, where you can
join a queue for the public galleries, known as
Strangers Galleries. Debates in the commons take place
on Mon. Tues. and Thurs. from 2-30 pm; Wed. & Fri. from
9-30 am. |
